Hong Kong has set an ambitious goal: carbon neutrality by 2050. The road to that goal runs through everyday life — the cars people drive, the electricity they use at home, and the batteries that store it. Here is how the city is getting there, and how battery technology is making it possible.

    It’s Green to Go Green

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on Hong Kong’s busy streets has increased tenfold over the past eight years. This is due in large part to the city’s carefully designed incentives for EV adoption. Numerous tax benefits — such as exempting newly registered EVs from registration fees — have driven the surge.

Solar power has followed a similar path. The Hong Kong government’s Feed-in-Tariff scheme pays homeowners for electricity generated by their rooftop panels, and solar generation has expanded more than tenfold over the last ten years.

Challenges of Decarbonization in the Grid

As more everyday appliances and vehicles rely on electricity, the grid must adapt. Power lines can become congested, especially during peak-demand hours, which lowers the quality of the electricity supplied.

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited — which supplies more than 80% of the city’s residents — has begun strengthening its network with smarter grids: systems that know when to store electricity and when to release it, while giving customers more freedom to choose when to draw power.

Residential Battery Systems Keep the Lights On

With rising electricity demand, residents are turning to lithium batteries for home energy storage. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries have become a popular choice in residential systems. LFP is comparatively cheaper than other lithium chemistries because it does not require materials as rare for storing electricity.

The trade-off is lower energy per kilogram, but this matters little at home, where weight and volume constraints are far less strict than in electric vehicles. The result: households can keep the electricity they generate and use it on their own terms.

Electric Vehicles Have Come to Stay

Electric vehicles themselves have also developed rapidly over the past decade. BYD, one of China’s leading EV manufacturers, uses LFP batteries in its cars — with a specialized chemistry called Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) that overcomes LFP’s lower energy density.

Since the battery accounts for a large share of an EV’s cost, making batteries more affordable makes electric vehicles more accessible. LMFP batteries deliver range and charging speeds comparable to conventional lithium-ion systems.
